After all of these years of Bible study, I still do not have any light on why many of the old testament saints had multiple wives at the same time and yet had the blessings of God upon them.  This is especially curious in regard to those who were under the law such as David and Solomon.  What have I missed?  Does any one have any light on this?

Hey Sam
Good question. The only answer I can think of is the fact that God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation. So the numbers of the Nation of Israel had to increase. Genesis 12: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

Is it possible that we ASSUME that Abraham (and other of the Patriarchs) was only to have one wife because of our current understanding of Scripture to us?  Is there any Scripture that told Abraham how many wives he should or should not have?  We know that Hagar was the bondwoman and produced the child of the flesh, while Sarah produced the child of the promise.  Did God have a problem with Hagar being joined to Abraham other than the effort to produce the child of promise ahead of God's plan through Sarah?

How about David and Solomon?  We know what the Law said about divorce, but did the Law address the number of wives a man should or should not have?  Still wondering...

Hey Sam:
I agree our concept of how many wife a man should have is different now than in Abraham's day. In fact, their marriages were different. They had no ministers nor licenses. When they were joined together and became one they were married. Genesis 24: 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. Divorce was also different. The woman could not get a divorce for any reason but all a man had to do was give her a bill of divorcement and put her out of his house. Deuteronomy 24: 1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. Romans 7: 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
The women were also servants that could be used to produce children and they had no right at all. What different world we live in today. I am sure glad I am living in the age of grace.
