Hi, your message board is helpful. I have a question about bible translations. I'm new to the grace message and am used to other translations. I've heard on different paltalk, etc. messages that we should use the KJB. My problem is that sometimes where other translations use the word "justice" the KJB uses the word "judgment" (for example, Amos Ch5 v. 24). Are the people being judged or given justice? Maybe others can discern when judgment means judgment and when judgment means justice in the KJB but I can't. When I try to read the Psalms or Proverbs there are many expressions that just don't make sense (for example, Proverbs 8 v. 12, "I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions." What is witty inventions (it's not in Webster's 1828)? There are so many expressions in the KJB that I have no idea about what they mean that I have to look in another translation to see what the expression means. Webster's helps with some of the words but there are many words in the KJB that I need to know but are not in Webster's.

If I stay with the KJB how can I get the help I need to understand the many expressions and words that I can't find or look-up in a dictionary?

Hi: Thanks for the question. Here is a web site with the KJV dictionary, the 1828 Noah Webster. It has the meaning of witty from Proverbs 8: 12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. 1. Prossessed of wit; full of wit; as a witty poet. http://av1611.com/kjbp/kjv-dictionary/kjv-dictionary-index.html
When I read Amos 5: 24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. I read it just like it is. I would not know that judgment means anything but judgment. I know that old English words may not be in use today and some times we may have to look up the meaning but which is better having a few words we don't understand or having words left out or added. Graceassured, I normally just let the context determine the meaning of the the words in the KJV. I suppose it is difficult if you have been using modern versions for an extended period of time and trying to adjust to the KJV.

Amos 5:24 "judgment" context 5:7 & 5:15 it is just different forms of judgments that are being used. Why the modern versions use "justice" instead of "judgment" who knows but Im sure they would have a politically correct answer for it.

Pro 8:12 "witty inventions" versus "discretion" versus "discernment" versus "devices I find out" versus "reflection" versus "ingenious inventions"
Boy no one could make up their mind on how to translate this word "mĕzimmah"

You really don't need dictionaries to help you just let the holy spirit guide your understanding of what is being said in the KJV. But it all depends are you trying to grow spiritually or trying to translate the bible into another language?

Thanks but barrybsmith wasn't that helpful. What do the KJV translators mean by "witty inventions". I still don't know. How do you find out? Barrybsmith just made a list of things but didn't answer the question. He did the same thing concerning the word "judgement"--barrybsmith just gave a list of Strong's dictionary meanings but again, which dictionary meaning helps me understand the KJV translations use of the word "judgement" in this passage? He doesn't know either. He also mentions that we do not need dictionaries because we can let the Holy Spirit guide us. But what if we still need help in understanding the words in the KJV? I am hopeful that someone else has better informed and instructive comments. I'm sure that others also get "stuck" from time to time in trying to understand the KJV's intended meaning of the words used.
